Chapter 12

I suppose that Anthony must have been as surprised to see me as I was to see him, but his granite features barely moving as he stared out at his captors with pure hatred. My stomach churned as I tried to quell the sudden tremors that rocked me to my core.

Anthony.

“Quite a job getting him down here,” said Drusus, swelling with pride beyond his already massive dimensions.

“Are you showing off your prize again?” Vitellius joined us, with Lady Juno not far behind.

“I was just explaining to Lady Julia,” said Drusus, tartly, “how the VT did not give up without a fight.”

Vitellius snorted dismissively. “They say that these humans have the strength of a vampire, but I saw little sign of it when I tangled with him.”

“There were five of us, Vitellius,” Lady Juno reminded him, dryly. “And I seem to recall him knocking you flat on your back.”

Vitellius blustered irritably. “He did not. I tripped over something. And I was quick to regain my feet and put him in his place.”

“You punched him in the stomach while Drusus’s servants held him down.”

“That is not how I remember it,” said Vitellius.

Hearing about this was almost more than I could stand. My eyes kept darting over to Anthony, trying to ask with a look if he was alright. The thought of him being overwhelmed by these vampires sickened me.

It also confused me a little. I could only assume that Drusus’s servants were tough fighters, because these three Anthony could have taken with one hand tied behind his back.

“Even then, he made a break for it,” Drusus spoke up again. “Managed to get away from my servants. Fortunately, I was able to chase him down and tackle him to the ground.”

I tried not to let my eyebrows shoot up at this. The idea of Drusus chasing anyone down, let alone someone as athletic as Anthony, was akin to a hippopotamus winning the Kentucky Derby.

Vitellius was less guarded with his disbelief. “Leaving out a very salient point there, aren’t you Drusus?”

“Such as?”

“The fact that you were on horseback.”

Drusus looked affronted. “So what? I was in control of the horse. I still chased the man down.”

“I’d say the horse deserves most of the credit,” said Lady Juno.

Personally, I would have said that any horse which carried Drusus deserved more than credit, it deserved a hernia belt, a pension and a retirement villa in the Seychelles.

“Well, I was the one who tackled him to the ground,” Drusus insisted.

“Looked to me like you fell off and landed on top of him.”

“I did no such thing!”

“When the horse reared up,” noted Juno, before adding, “or tried to.”

“I did not fall off,” said Drusus, enunciating each word so there could be no mistake, and clearly furious at his friends for showing him up in front of me. “I hurled myself on top of him with no thought for my personal safety. Taking on a Vamp Taker single-handed is not something that just anyone would do, you know.”

“What was he doing here?” I asked.
